Property overrun with mesquite??? Mesquite can be quite a nuisance for ranchers and non-ranchers alike. For ranchers they produce a minuscule amount of beans (food) for cattle once a year and then they are barren trees blocking the sun from beneficial/edible forage the rest of the year. For others they are just brush rendering portions of land temporarily unusable.
Every year, they produce a prolific # of beans, which cattle LOVE the taste of! (=worsening the problem.) new mesquite is being annually reseeded, sprouted, & slowly but surely taking over the TX panhandle more & more. And ranchers know 1 sq ft mesquite= 1sq ft wasted space your cattle can't feed on.
Mesquite is one of the most locally adapted/drought tolerant plants in TX, in some cases their roots can go ~200 feet down, (you cannot even burn it to death! Though some have tried & failed, sadly). In other words: destroying mesquite can be a war (to at least some people).
